It’s an obvious gap in Suzuki’s line-up – a performance-orientated big-bore nakedbike. But the company – probably the slowest of the Japanese heavyweights to emerge out of its GFC slumber – could be about to fill that hole with respected German magazine Motorrad speculating that we could be seeing a GSR1000 unveiled later this year, with the Intermot (Cologne) or EICMA (Milan) shows the most likely destinations.
Like the GSR750, which utilises a GSX-R750 engine, the GSR1000 would follow suit by making use of a GSX-R1000-based powerplant, but just what level of spec it will be at is all guesswork at this stage.
If it follows the GSR750 template it could all be a little underwhelming – too much top end has been lopped off – but if Suzuki breaks that mould things could really get interesting, with the company preparing to join its Japanese colleagues, Aprilia, Ducati, Triumph, KTM and now EBR in what is a very crowded segment. Of that bunch, the EBR 119SX will go on sale in Australia later this year, while Honda sold the European-made CB1000R locally a few years ago before dropping it from its line-up.
Once, the Bandit was Suzuki’s go-to naked streetfighter weapon, and is still available in Australia as the 1250S. It also forms the basis of the GSX120FS sportstouring machine.
