REVIEW

Suzuki DL1000 V-Strom

Suzuki struggled with its entry into the V-twin sports bike market, receiving some bad reviews on the unusual rear suspension of its TL1000S

We've all got over that, and the powerplant - which was always good - has met its third incarnation in the V-Strom adventure tourer.

Suze has had a few bites at this market, perhaps most notably with its DR750, or DR Big, of the late eighties.

It's a tough area to get into, with BMW basically ruling the roost partly through experience, and everyone from Honda through to Triumph having a serious go. The V-Strom is one of the better challengers, using a well-sorted powerplant and transmission in a premium frame fitted with decent running gear.

Which is a long way of saying it steers well, stops well, and has capable suspension. Rider and pillion accommodation are both good.

The final drive is chain, fuel capacity generous, while the seat height is about medium for this class. There's no factory luggage available in Oz, but Givi makes a set. Options include a taller windscreen and a centrestand.

Styling is on the fussy side, but this is a really enjoyable ride with good handling and a super-flexible powerplant. Pricing is sharp.
