The Victorian parliamentary inquiry into motorcycle safety. The massive report, far from the monster that we thought it might be – read: green light on hi-ves vests and front numberplates – produced a number of well-considered recommendations, including one about proper statistical analysis of motorcycle data instead of the mismatch of figures and statistics we currently have. The government has six months to reply to the report.

This goes to the Federal Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, the Hon. Anthony Albanese MP, for his recent comments on the importance of motorcycles in the transport mix for Australian cities. Rather than dwelling on motorcycle safety, the minister has called for a greater focus on bikes and scooters in Australia’s overall transport planning process – heartening words, in a time when most discussions about bikes seem to revolve around accidents, fatalities, policing and penalties.
