Surprise of 2016

A very odd trawler find, Mike's the man, lane discipline and jail time

Rod Chapman: Bikesales staffer
From out of left field, I'm going for the Honda CT90 Trail that was inadvertently pulled up by a trawler some 50 miles off Lakes Entrance on the coast of Victoria (see here). Now that would have turned some heads at the local fish market!

The professionalism and talent ‘Mad’ Mike Jones showed during his last-minute call-up to replace Hector Barbara in the Avintia Ducati team during both the Japanese and Australian rounds of the MotoGP. Ten sessions and two races later, many of them in hideous weather conditions, he picked up a championship point and surprised many when handed the bike back without a scratch — has anyone ever achieved that on debut?  Oh, and the news of fraud allegations against Braaap founder Brad Smith knocked me for six. Here’s hoping his claims of innocence are found to be true and his name is cleared.

I honestly haven’t been surprised. That almost makes it the Disappointment of 2016, but 2016 has been a staid year in terms of bike development and racing. Don’t get me wrong, I was glued to the set for MotoGP this year, but the result wasn’t surprising, the course of bike development and model releases have stayed the tried-and-true course and I have genuinely remained unsurprised all year. I think the last few races of the 2015 MotoGP seasons ruined 2016 in that way - it’s been hard to surprise me ever since.

1. That people are actually getting worse at moving over – do the speed limit in the left-hand lane. As our columnist Boris said: "This is what civilised folks do. This allows speed fiends, lunatics and people on motorcycles to overtake you on the correct overtaking side." Spot on!
2. Wayne Gardner ending up in the slammer after a seemingly innocuous traffic incident in Japan during the MotoGP round at Motegi. The bloke's a hero in the land of the rising sun after his Suzuka 8-Hour and MotoGP heroics in the '80s and '90s, but even that goodwill wasn't enough - although he may have been given extra ginger allocation in his bento box... He was eventually released after nearly two weeks and flew straight back to Oz.
