The 2011 Australian Supermoto Championship will feature at the remaining two standalone rounds of the Australian Superbike Championships at Queensland Raceway (June 3-5) and Phillip Island (November 18-20).
Supermoto – a mix of dirt and tarmac racing – was held as a support event at a Queensland Raceway round of the Superbike title in 2010, and the interest was such that the discipline has now been included for two rounds in 2011, complete with uprated Australian title status.
After exploding onto the scene in the early noughties – there was even a world title around at Broadford in 2002 -- supermoto has waned in popularity over recent years, with the Australian championship lacking for suitors and held over a single weekend since 2008.
At Queensland Raceway and Phillip Island, the traditional S1 and S2 categories will compete on a purpose-built circuit utilising natural and man-made jumps, while the 450 Supermoto RR class has been added and will be bitumen only.
At Phillip Island, the go-kart circuit will be used for all three classes.
