After the success of last year's maiden event, the Australian Supercross Championship will return to Phillip Island during the 2014 Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix from October 17-19.
Round three and four will be held at Phillip Island, but the balance of the five-round calendar is still up in the air with the last provisional calendar released by promoter, International Entertainment Group (IEG), way back in December, 2013.
However, the Phillip Island release does mention an October 10 championship kick-off in NSW, with fits in with recent speculation that a double-header is being planned by IEG in Bathurst on the same weekend as the iconic 1000 V8 Supercar race.
IEG recently lost promotional rights to the Australian Superbike Championship after a trying five-year tenure, which has now – quite understandable -- placed the microscope under the supercross title.
The uncertainty is already having a negative impact, with Yamaha Motor Australia announcing today its three factory-supported teams will not contest the 2014 championship. Yamaha cited "the lack of precise, confirmed information surrounding the organisation and promotion of the championship” for its decision.
General admission viewing of the supercross at Phillip Island is again free to all MotoGP ticket holders. However, grandstand and VIP options are now available by clicking HERE.
