Supercross returning to Queensland in 2024

The Australian Supercross Championship is looking to go bigger and better in 2024

The 2024 Australian Supercross Championship will open in Brisbane, marking the first time in five-years that the series has visited the Sunshine State.

With a capacity of 10,000, Kayo Stadium in Redcliffe will host the opening round on October 12, with organisers hopeful of a sell-out crowd.

“Timings have aligned to secure a boutique venue like Kayo Stadium, where we believe the location, shape and size will produce a world-class track and allow for a bumper crowd and atmosphere for the fans,” said Championship Director, Kelly Bailey.

“We anticipate the Saturday event selling out, which may leave the door open for another day of racing action.”

Queensland has been without a round of the Australian Supercross Championship since Brisbane hosted the opener in 2019. The series has a proud history in the state, with previous locations including Coolum, Jimboomba, and Toowoomba.

Kayo Stadium, also known as Dolphins Stadium, is home to the Dolphins rugby league club which competes in the NRL. The stadium is in the City of Moreton Bay, approximately 20 minutes from Brisbane airport.

No other locations have been announced at the time of writing, but the Championship’s official website lists three more rounds as “Coming Soon”.

New South Wales and Victoria will almost certainly be included in the schedule, while a visit to South Australia is also a possibility.

The Australian Supercross Championship returns in 2024

The uncertainty surrounding the WSX Championship event at Marvel Stadium could mean a return of the popular AUS-X Open event that launched in Sydney in 2015 before moving to Melbourne in 2019.

A return of AUS-X could also see the return of the S-X Open in Auckland and the cross-Tasman FIM Oceania Supercross Championship.

However, a press release stated that the organisers will “continue to focus on executing high quality events while supporting the sport holistically to deliver sustainable growth in Australia”, hinting at an Australia-only championship in 2024.

According to Bailey, the 2023 Australian Supercross Championship was a success.

“We introduced new programs, achieved a 77 per cent increase in gate numbers year on year, had a 10 per cent uplift in attendance per round, and an 80 per cent increase in broadcast minutes watched,” Bailey said. “While we are proud of what was accomplished, it’s just the beginning. Stay tuned for 2024 to be even bigger and better.”
