The five-round 2011 Australasian Supercross Championship (Super X) will commence in Melbourne on Saturday, October 22, with all the major manufacturers going into bat with extremely strong line-ups.
Based on performances in 2010, Yamaha looks set to be a leading light once again, with its Open class roster featuring Jay Marmont and Jake Moss.
Marmont and Moss were second and third respectively in 2011, with the championship won by Kawasaki’s American import Josh Hansen.
In previous years, Marmont has been a championship contender, but with no top US factory pilots campaigning full-time in 2011, Marmont knows it’s his time to shine.
“Without a rider like (Chad) Reed here, the 2011 championship is more open than ever,” said Marmont. “I took some time off after the MX Nationals to recharge and I think it has done me the world of good. I feel fresh on the bike and testing has gone really well, so I look forward to kicking off at round one and chasing this championship.”
Over at KTM, reigning No. 4 Tye Simmonds, just back from his rookie year in America, will return to Super X, alongside former Australian supercross champion Dan Reardon and Ryan Marmont.
Hansen won’t return to defend his Super X title, but Kawasaki still some star power with Scot Billy Mackenzie; Honda has Cheyne Boyd and Todd Waters; Dan McCoy and New Zealander Cody Cooper will uphold Suzuki honour; and local stalwart Craig Anderson will be on his privateer Honda.
In the Lites class, Yamaha will have Kirk Gibbs and Luke Styke at the controls of its 2012 YZ250F; Kawasaki has the soon-to-be world MX-bound Dean Ferris ready for action; Honda’s drafted in young American Gavin Faith for his Aussie debut; and the three-man squad from KTM will be led by this year’s MX Nationals champion Matt Moss, with backing from Josh Cachia and Brenden Harrison.
And one of the world’s best freestyle motocross riders, Blake ‘Bilko’ Williams, has just confirmed he will be performing in a demonstration at the event.
Tickets are still on sale for round one, which will be held at Knights Stadium in Sunshine.
Meanwhile, just prior to the opening battle, five Kawasaki riders will be making an in-store appearance at Matt Jones Motorcycles from 9:30-10:30am on October 22.
The quintet will be Mackenzie and Ferris, freestyle motocross riders Brad Burch and Kain Saul; and Australian women’s motocross champion Meghan Rutledge.
The Monster Energy sampling team and Monster Girls will also be in attendance, plus there will be a barbecue breakfast and Super X ticket giveaways.
Matt Jones Motorcycles will also have retail offers on the day, including an accessories clearance and a free signed Ferris MXoN replica M2R helmet with every new KX motocross purchase.
It’s all happening from 9:30am at Matt Jones Motorcycles, Unit 2, 29 Reserve Road in Melton, tel (03) 9746 0134.
