Styke wins maiden MX1 round

The KTM rider has broken through for his first Australian Motocross Championship victory in the premier class ranks

KTM's Luke Styke secured his first ever MX1 overall win at round three of the MX Nationals in Broadford, Vic on Sunday, April 26.

After two rounds of standing on the third step of the podium, this time Styke moved himself up two spots after a first and third place in the two MX1 motos to claim the round honours.

“This win feels great and I really just couldn’t have done this without the support of the whole KTM team,” Styke said. “We have all been working so hard, and I think you can see that with mine and Gibb’s results every weekend.
“We all put in the hard work during the week to make days like this happen, so it’s great that you can see it pay off. It’s great to get this first overall win for the team, and we’re just going to keep building from here.”

Behind Styke's 65pt haul, Kawasaki's Adam Monea (60) was second overall ahead of championship leader Kirk Gibbs (KTM) and Cody Cooper (Honda).

In a controversy packed moto one, Yamaha teammates Daniel Reardon and Kade Mosig came together while in first and second, which saw Reardon DNF and Mosig finish in 12th as Styke came home with the goods.

In moto two, the holeshot went to Cooper before Reardon hit the lead. However, it didn't last as Gibbs then assumed control to claim the victory.

In MX2, Luke Clout won both motos to strength his championship lead. His fellow Yamaha riders Jay Wilson and Jed Beaton were second and third, with the podium completed by Beaton and Takeshi Katsuya (Kawasaki) in the second.

“Today was just the day I was after,” Clout said. “I didn’t get the best of starts in either moto but I was able to get to the front early in the race and set the pace which is exactly what I wanted to do.

“The win today was good but the benefit is that I was able to extend my lead in the championship. The Broadford track today was in great shape and thanks to all the people that came out and supported the MX Nationals."

Round four is in Murray Bridge, SA on Sunday, May 17.
