Add some steel screws onto the Street 750 tyres, and what do you get: a marketing exercise cut from a more hardcore cloth than most. But that’s what Harley-Davidson is delivering at the Aspen Winter X Games, which are being held from January 23-26.
The Street 750 – part of the new Dark Custom family alongside the Street 500 -- has been fitted with studded tyres, and will be piloted by some handy types in the exhibition races: 2013 AMA Pro Grand National champion Brad Baker, 2012 AMA Pro Grand National Champion Jared Mees and his wife Nichole Mees, who is an AMA Pro flat track racer as well.
“The attitude and capabilities of the Street were influenced by thousands of young adults in cities around the world,” said Dino Bernacchi, Director of North American Marketing Communications, Harley-Davidson Motor Company. “So while we think ice racing is hardcore, it’s only fitting that Harley-Davidson is having extreme sports fans around the world help decide the X Games fate of the sport.
“We modified several Street motorcycles by adding steel screws to the tyres and let the world’s best flat track racers tear up the ice at high speeds. We think fans will be captivated by the extreme attitude and beauty they’ll see on the ice.”
The Winter X Games ice racing event is also serving as the springboard for the American debut of the Street 750. At the core of the motorcycle is a liquid-cooled Revolution X 60-degree V-twin with chain-driven single overhead cams and four-valves per cylinder. A six-speed transmission and two-into-one upswept exhaust completes the drive train, while the bike has a narrow frame, low seat height, 17-inch front tyre and mid controls.
Australia will only be seeing the Street 500 at first, a bike which will fall under the LAMS umbrella – and should be an instant hit when it goes on sale around January, 2015.
