There aren’t too many youthful movers and shakers who make it onto BRW’s Young Rich List after retirement, but two-time MotoGP Champion Casey Stoner is one of them.
The 27-year-old bowed out from MotoGP at the end of 2012 but he recently snuck into BRW’s 2013 Young Rich List – which lists the top 100 wealthiest Australians aged 40 or under – in 96th position. He’s also the youngest person to feature on this year’s list.
According to BRW the former world champ is worth a cool $20m – well off the $550m of list-topping software supremos Mike Cannon-Brookes and Scott Farquhar, but still far from loose change. Given Stoner reportedly walked away from a Honda MotoGP contract for 2013 worth $15m, the BRW figure does go some way to prove he wasn’t in the game simply for the money.
Stoner is, however, a little behind US-based supercross ace Chad Reed – he slotted into this year's list in 52nd place with a total fortune of $55m.
Since retiring from MotoGP Stoner has campaigned a Commodore for Red Bull Racing in the V8 Supercars Dunlop Series – the development class for the main V8 Supercars Championship. He’s struggled a little with the transition, sitting mid-field in the title, and recently announced he will take a break from any professional motorsport activities in 2014.
