Stoner beats Massa on four wheels

Cool as ice in victory

January 17, 2009

Aussie MotoGP star Casey Stoner has defeated reigning F1 No. 2, Brazilian Felipe Massa, in an ice karting race in Italy.

The duo was in town for the traditional Ducati and Ferrari pre-season ski event at Madonna di Campiglio, with the karting field completed by Stoner's new teammate, 2006 world champion Nicky Hayden, Ducati test rider Vittoriano Guareschi, Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer, and Massa's younger brother, Eduardo.

Stoner prevailed after passing Massa one lap from home, with Hayden third.

Ducati's 2009 MotoGP machine, the Desmosedici GP9, was unveiled a day earlier, featuring a carbon fibre frame. Its dry weight is just 148kg.

Stoner will attempt to wrest the MotoGP title back off Italian superstar Valentino Rossi this year, with all the action to start in Qatar on April 12. The local round will be at Phillip Island from October 16-18.

Stoner is still recovering from a wrist operation last October, but expects to join Hayden when pre-season testing resumes at Sepang in February.
