Casey Stoner and Chad Reed have been ranked second and fourth respectively in Business Review Weekly's annual list of Australia’s highest earning sport stars.
Stoner, now a two-time MotoGP world champion after a superb 2011, pocketed $9.5 million, still a cool $4.5 million behind the runaway No. 1, basketballer Andrew Bogut.
Behind Stoner, the motorsport theme continues with F1 driver and last year’s top earner Mark Webber ($9 million), followed by Reed ($8.5) and then cyclist Cadel Evans ($5 million), who propelled himself into local sporting folklore with his victory in the 2011 Tour de France.
Stoner’s elevation into second doesn’t come as a great surprise – he could even eclipse Bogut in future years if he continues to blaze a trail on the factory Honda – but Reed’s continued high ranking is somewhat of a surprise considering that he started up his own team at the start of 2011.
Following the top five, golf, tennis, cricket, football and soccer names feature heavily, and also a couple of women in the shape of tennis star Sam Stosur and multiple world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore.
