After one of the most enthralling seasons in the history of the AMA supercross title, Australia's Chad Reed has surrended his No. 1 plate to arch-rival James Stewart.
Stewart brought home his Yamaha in third place at the final round in Las Vegas, which was enough to wrap up the title from the Suzuki-backed Australian by 4pts.
Kawasaki's Ryan Villopoto won the final round from Reed, but the night belonged to the irrepressible Stewart.
"You have no idea how tough this has to come back from what happened at Anaheim 1," said Stewart. "This is the toughest I have ever had to fight to win a title. It's has been a hard-fought championship for everyone. I just want to thank everyone that has been involved in everything we've accomplished this season."
Reed was magnanimous in defeat.
"I gave it everything I had," he Reed. "I can walk away knowing I did that. We had a great season back and forth and were really consistent which kept us in (the title fight). I want to come back even harder and get it back next year. James had a great season and rode really well and I can't take that away from him."
"It's a long season racing back-to-back, week-after-week when every point counts. It is exhausting for not only the riders but more so the teams and my Rockstar Makita Suzuki guys have worked so hard for me this year. Despite being a new combination we were in the running for the championship till the very end and I am so grateful to be with them."
Reed will now head back to Australia for a holiday before the new season of Super X commences, where he is the defending champion.
In the Supercross Lites East/West shootout, Kawasaki's Christophe Pourcel defeated Suzuki's Ryan Dungey and Honda's Trey Canard. Australia's Jake Moss (Honda) was eighth.
