American superstar James Stewart has withdrawn from the final round of this year's Super X title in Brisbane on December 5, citing a dangerously low immune system which will keep him out of action for the remainder of 2009.
The no-show means the much-hyped shootout between Stewart and his Aussie adversary Chad Reed will not happen, and the arch-rivals will now renew acquaintances in the opening round of the 2010 AMA and world supercross title on January 9.
"I am so disappointed I can no longer come out and race in Australia and I apologise to all of the Australian fans," said Stewart. "I will definitely be there next year to make it up to you all. It is doctor's orders that I cannot race and my health has to be my No. 1 priority."
Stewart was forced to withdraw from the final day of the recent Bercy Supercross in Paris after contracting a severe case of food poisoning.
After returning home to the United States and a subsequent further battery of tests, Stewart was advised by his doctor and Yamaha team that he should discontinue any strenuous activity and not travel out of the country in the foreseeable future.
The managing director of Global Action Sports, Michael Porra, confirmed his company is now in negotiations with another "big name US replacement" for Brisbane. And it won't be Tiger Woods...
Jay Marmont currently leads the open class of Super X by 1pt over Reed with two rounds remaining in Hamilton, New Zealand (November 21) and Brisbane. Meanwhile, Suzuki's Matt Moss has already wrapped up the lites title after a stunning campaign.
