Stauffers lead Yamaha's factory line-up for 2009

As the company also increases its support program

December 18, 2008

Yamaha has announced the four riders who will carry its factory fortunes in the 2009 Australian Superbike Championship, and three faces are already familiar names.

Siblings Jamie and Daniel Stauffer return in the Superbike class on the updated YZF-R1, aiming to win back the title from Honda rider Glenn Allerton.

Jamie will also contest the Supersport class alongside West Aussie incumbent Bryan Staring, while Pat Medcalf will join Yamaha's factory operation in 2009 following a standout Superstock class win this season.

The 19-year-old has just two years of road racing experience under his belt, and will campaign a YZF-R1 in the newly inaugurated 1000cc Superstock class.

"I'm really looking forward to the new season and what it holds for the team, there will be plenty of changes with the new championship structure and I believe we're well placed to take advantage," said Jamie, a two-time Superbike champion and the reigning Supersport No. 1 "The race for the 2008 title was close and 2009 will be competitive also -- the package we have is a race winner and I'll be doing everything I can to ensure the championship is back with YRT and Yamaha."

In addition to its factory operation, Yamaha has also announced the following support program for the 2009 national road racing season:

  • Five Star Yamaha/Allect Racing's Ben Henry and Fraser's Motorcycles' Zac Davies will contest the premier Superbike class;
  • Scott Charlton returns to the Vern Graham Yamaha team in the Supersport class;
  • Amy O'Mara will progress to the Superstock class in 2009 from the FZ6 Cup, following a solid year of competition in the FZ6 Cup;
  • Reece Bancell Scholarship winner Rick Olson also steps up to the Superstock class from the FZ6 Cup;
  • Christian Casella is the first rider announced for the newly-incepted YRD Development Team within the Supersport class, with a second rider to be confirmed in the coming weeks;
  • YRD will also offer its backing to a team of up-and-coming racers within the junior ranks. The line-up will include Adrian Digiandomenico, with further details to be announced shortly.
