Stauffer peerless at Queensland Raceway

The two-time Australian Superbike champion produced a blemish-free scorecard in round five of this year's title aboard his Honda CBR1000RR

Perfect conditions at Queensland Raceway complemented a perfect run of results for Team Honda’s Jamie Stauffer, who dominated round five of the Australian Superbike Championship on June 5.

Stauffer won both 17-lap races on his CBR1000RR, the first one a 2.423-second blitz over Team Suzuki’s Josh Waters and Procon Maxima BMW’s Glenn Allerton, and the second by 1.993 seconds ahead of Allerton, who in turn fended off a late challenge from Wayne Maxwell (Team HOnda).

Stauffer, who won the overall ahead of Allerton and Waters, also lowered his own lap record to 1:09.125 in race one.

“It was a great weekend for us, we really needed to have at least a race win, so to get two wins, pole position and the round is what we needed,” said Stauffer. “We can come out and try even harder up here with the V8 Supercars.

“In the first race we got in front and just tried to maintain the lead really, the bike felt good. Josh pressured us there for a while but in the end we pulled a bit of a gap.

“The second race was much the same, the times seemed a bit slower in the second race, myself included, but I was able to get a gap and be a lot more comfortable out there.”

A two-time Australian Superbike champion, Stauffer has now rocketed to second in the title hunt, 56pts shy of Allerton.

The i-Style Natural Aprilia Team’s Ben Attard retains third in the points chase with a solid run this weekend.

The battle for Superbike honours resumes in August as Queensland Raceway hosts the second ‘two-plus’ four meet for the year featuring the ASBK alongside V8 Supercars.

Today’s pair of Supersport races produced a carbon copy of results, with the Yamaha Racing Team’s Kevin Curtain taking two narrow race wins and the overall.

Team-mate Rick Olson finished third, bookending Brendan Clarke who returned to the track with a spirited ride on the Champion’s Ride Days Honda.

“The track here at QR is always tough as there isn’t much to separate the riders," said Curtain. "As a rider, you know when you get here you have to be on your game for every lap, of every race, and there is no such thing as an easy win here.

“But it’s nice to come away with the win as the team is based here in Queensland and we are now back on top in the points, exactly where we need to be."

Previous championship leader and polesitter Mitchell Carr (Triumph) had a day to forget, with clutch problems ending his race early this morning and a crash at turn three resulting in a finish at the back of the pack.

Curtain leaves Queensland Raceway as the new championship leader, with Carr dropping down the order to sixth.

Team Suzuki’s Brodie Waters’ consistent run elevates him to second in the championship, 21pts off the lead.

Christan Casella (Triumph), Aaron Gobert (Yamaha) and Olson round out the top five after the penultimate round of racing, with the class next on track at Phillip Island in November.
