State of the bike nation: up 16.3 percent

The Australian motorcycle market continues to show signs that it's broken the back of long-term sluggishness, recording another solid 'knock' in February
The Australian motorcycle market – ATV, off-road, road and scooter -- has continued strong growth into 2012, with 16,454 units retailed in the first two months of the year -- hammering the corresponding 2011 figure by 16.3 percent.
All the market segments are up, with road leading the way with a 26.1 percent increase, ahead of ATV (16.4), off-road (11.3) and scooter (0.8).
In terms of units retailed, that equates to 6389 (road), 4876 (off-road), 3351 (ATV) and 1838 (scooter).
Honda has continued to push on with brute force, with its 3804 sales in 2012, ahead of Yamaha (2630), Suzuki (1796), Kawasaki (1326), Harley-Davidson (1206) and KTM (910).
Double digit growth is the norm for most manufacturers so far in 2012, with only a few brands – most minnows – failing to gain more traction.
In March, the Bikesales Network will run an in-depth state of the market story.
