Staring stretches winning streak to four

Dominates round five of the Australian Superbike Championship at Queensland Raceway, fending off all challengers to extend his buffer at the front

Honda's Bryan Staring starred in found five of the Viking Group Australian Superbike Championship at Queensland Raceway this afternoon.

The Gold Coast-based 23-year-old was able to fend off all challengers, collecting maximum points to extend his lead in the championship to 18.5pts over fellow Honda rider Wayne Maxwell. A maximum of 102pts will be available in the final two rounds.

"It's great to take away two more race victories, in terms of the championship Queensland Raceway has been vital for us," said Staring.

"The bike was strong all weekend long, and was quick over race distance without sacrificing grip.

"The bike was only a few weeks old so full credit goes to my team for getting it up to speed so quickly, it was a group effort this weekend.

"This sets us up for a strong run home at Phillip Island and Symmons Plains, but I know Wayne will be strong and guys like Josh (Waters) and Glenn (Allerton) will be eager to win races too."

Ducati's Jamie Stauffer was second overall in Queensland with 2-3 finishes, ahead of Maxwell (4-2) and Allerton (Honda, 3-4).

Defending champion Josh Waters (Suzuki) did not compete after failing to come up after a recent crash in America left in him an induced coma for a number of days. He's now expected to return to racing in the penultimate round at Phillip Island from September 10-12, alongside the L&H V8 Supercar endurance race.

Positions one and two in the championship remain unchanged, but the fight for third place is now a logjam with less than 10pts separating four riders - Allerton, Shawn Giles (Suzuki), Scott Charlton (Suzuki) and Waters.

Meanwhile, experienced campaigner Kevin Curtain (Yamaha) made a brilliant cameo return to Australian championship racing at Queensland Raceway, winning both supersport races.

Troy Herfoss (Suzuki) leads the supersport title by 27pts over Triumph's Christian Casella.
