Sportier, smarter Yamaha TMAX Tech MAX heading our way

Twenty years after its initial release, Yamaha has overhauled its first and long-lived maxi scooter

Yamaha has pulled the covers off the new 2022 Yamaha TMAX and up-spec 2022 Yamaha TMAX Tech MAX, with the latest iterations of the brand's maxi scooter platform boasting sportier bodywork and styling, new LED headlights, a new screen, 7-inch TFT instrumentation, new spin-forged alloy wheels, revised ergonomics, and sportier suspension settings.

And in good news for Aussie maxi-scooter fans, Yamaha Motor Australia says it's hopeful of securing the up-spec Yamaha TMAX Tech MAX variant for our market, with heated grips and seat, an electric screen, cruise control, adjustable rear suspension and backlit switchblocks as standard.

Coming our way in a 'Dark Petrol' colour scheme, historically Australia has only received the base model. The base model will be available in Extreme Yellow, Icon Blue, and Sword Grey.

The Yamaha TMAX blazed a trail when first released in 2001, prompting a flood of similar higher-output maxi-scooters to follow in its wheel tracks. A popular option in scooter-mad Europe, it’s only ever sold here in Australia in modest numbers.

Now Yamaha has given the eighth-generation TMAX a thorough revision, with sportier styling and slightly sportier ergonomics, along with lightweight wheels shod with Bridgestone Battlax SC2 tyres developed specifically to suit the new model.

The changes come just a couple of years after the model's last update, when the engine received a 32cc capacity hike, giving three per cent and six per cent boosts in power and torque respectively, along with several styling tweaks.

While the revised ergonomics and new handlebars see the three points of the rider triangle moved to deliver a more forward-inclined riding position, comfort is enhanced by a new and adjustable screen said to minimise wind noise, and by a new rider backrest with 30mm of fore/aft adjustment.

The TMAX’s ‘controlled-fill’ aluminium die-cast frame continues, but a slimmer mid-section means it’s now easier to get a foot down to the ground when stationary. Passenger footpegs are now 5mm lower, while the pillion’s hip position is 15mm higher.

Garmin turn-by-turn navigation will be available in some markets

The Euro 5 compliant, 560cc parallel-twin engine also continues, pumping out 48hp (35kW) at 7500rpm and 55.7Nm at 5250rpm in the TMAX currently offered here in Australia. That makes it LAMS compliant for learner riders.

Other features include keyless starting, new switches, Bluetooth connectivity, waterproof smartphone storage with USB charging, and an electronically operated aero-style fuel cap.

We’re yet to receive confirmation on when the new 2022 Yamaha TMAX Tech MAX will reach Australia, with local pricing and specification details to be released closer to its arrival Down Under.
