A new motorsport park under development in South Australia has confirmed it’s jumping through the hoops required to host a future round of the MotoGP world championship.
Based at Taelim Bend, 95km south east of Adelaide’s CBD, the 7.2km circuit will form part of the SA Motorsport Park, a project being driven by well known South Australian businessman Sam Shahin.
The FIM’s chief safety officer and former Grand Prix racer Franco Uncini has been working with the project for some time in a bid for the circuit to attain the A-level grading required to host high-profile FIM-sanctioned races.
Uncini recently carried out a safety inspection at the site prior to construction starting and described the venue as “very exciting” with a “fantastic layout.”
The SA Motorsport Park’s general manager of commercial operations Damien White told Speedcafe that, “Sam [Shahin] has made no secret of the fact we have an appetite to host the highest level events, and a round of the MotoGP Championship fits the brief I’m working to,” he said. “We were enthused, but not surprised at Uncini’s reaction, it’s not until you physically see the layout that you truly understand its character.
“We continue to work with FIM and FIA to attain final approvals. When completed we will be licensed to conduct every category except Formula One.”
Speaking to Australian media, Uncini didn’t rule out the possibility of Australia hosting two rounds of the MotoGP world championship, responding to the question with the statement: "There’s no reason not to".
