Somehow we couldn't see Malcolm Turnbull (or Bill Shorten) being quite as liberal as Turkey's president Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has given the green light for one of the country's most famous sporting sons to try and break the 400km/h barrier on a motorcycle during a bridge inauguration.
Kenan Sofuoglu, the four-time world supersport champion — and well on his way to number five in 2016 on the Kawasaki ZX-6R — plans to hit over 400km/h on the Kawasaki H2R across the new Osman Gazi Bridge in Turkey on June 30. Osman Gazi is the world's fourth largest mid-span bridge.
"I have spoken on the phone with our president and he gave his support for this speed test,” said Sofuoglu. “I need to reach 400km/h in less than 30 seconds. Afterwards it poses a risk of rupturing the tyre, so prior to this we will apply the cooling method. We will also prepare a special leather suit. I have been working for three months for this record, and it will not be easy."
Sofuoglu has already tested and reached speeds of 391km/h in preparation for taking on the Osman Gazi Bridge. See video below:
The 2016 WorldSSP field is now on summer break ahead of the next round at the Lausitzring from September 16-18.
