SMIDSY campaign lauded

The ‘SMIDSY' YouTube motorcycle awareness advertisement launched in October 2012 has been shortlisted for a high-profile PR award

The SMIDSY (Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You) motorcycle awareness commercial released via YouTube last October has been shortlisted for the upcoming CommsCon Awards, which recognise exemplary work in the public relations and communications industry.

Backed by law firm Maurice Blackburn and Motorcycling Australia, the advertisement was one of five nominated in the category of ‘Most Innovative Use of Social Media’. It highlighted the statistic that in 84 per cent of motorcycle fatalities where drivers turned into or across the rider the driver was at fault. The ad -- which urged motorists "Before you turn, take a longer look" -- was a not-so-subtle rebuttal of earlier TAC advertisements that portrayed riders as reckless risk-takers.

The CommsCon Awards are currently being judged by a panel of 20 judges from within the PR industry, with the awards to be announced in Sydney on March 14 at a gala function presented by comedian Bob Downe.
