1. Kenny and Kenny Roberts Jr
When Kenny Roberts Jr clinched the 2000 premier class world championship, he and his dad became the first father and son to both win a 500cc grand prix world title. During his 15-season grand prix career, young Kenny stood on the top step of the podium eight times. His dad, the three-time 500cc world champ (1978-1980), amassed a total of 25 grand prix victories from eight seasons between 1974 and 1983.
2. Les and Stuart Graham
The first-ever 500cc world champion, Les Graham enjoyed eight wins across three classes during his five-year grand prix career between 1949 and 1953. Eighteen years after he lofted the inaugural world championship trophy above his head, his son Stuart won the 1967 50cc TT at the Isle of Man, as well as the 125cc Finnish Grand Prix the same year. Tragically, Les never witnessed Stuart’s successes. He was killed when he crashed during the 1953 Senior TT.
3. Helmet and Stefan Bradl
German rider Helmut Bradl scored five wins in the 1991 250cc world championship to finish runner-up in the intermediate title standings. Exactly 20 years later, his son Stefan went one better and claimed the intermediate class world title when he won the 2011 Moto2 World Championship.
4. Graziano and Valentino Rossi
Valentino Rossi is a bloke whose achievements no-one needs to spell out. As he campaigns his 21st season of grand prix racing this year, he has 112 wins to his name. His father won a handful of grands prix in his time, too, having clinched the Yugoslavian, Dutch and Swedish rounds of the 1979 250cc world championship 37 years ago.
5. Nello and Alberto Pagani
The 1949 125cc world champion Nello Pagani’s four grand prix wins all came in the Italian’s first year of GP racing. He had two wins in the inaugural 125cc championship to take the title and two wins in the 500cc world championship to finish runner-up to Les Graham. Twenty years later, his son Alberto would take his first of a total of three grand prix victories at the 1969 Nations Grand Prix in Imola.
6. Angel and Pablo Nieto
In his 11 years in the 125cc world championship, Pablo Nieto scored just one victory, one second and six third-place finishes between 2002 and 2004. His father, Angel, managed 90 wins in his 21 seasons campaigned between 1969 and 1984 and it puts him in third position in the all-time winners list behind Giacomo Agostini (122 wins) and Valentino Rossi (112).
And not forgetting…
Despite not all these men winning or even campaigning world championship grands prix, when you talk about father-and-son duos in motorcycle racing, there’s some families you simply can’t not mention. These talented men and their offspring include Ron and Leon Haslam, Sito and Axel Pons, Wayne and Remy Gardner, Michael and Robert Dunlop, Randy and Dakota Mamola and Sandy and Wayne Rainey. Then there’s Noel and Dwight Beare, the Aussie father-and-son sidecar duo who have campaigned four recent Isle of Man TTs together, and also Aki and Niklas Ajo. Dad Aki raced a single 125cc grand prix race in 1993 and now owns and runs the Red Bull KTM Ajo team in which his son Niklas campaigned the Moto3 championship until last year.
