Singapore sling?

Motorcycle owners in the city/state are getting incentives to deregister older motorcycles – all in the name of curbing pollution

According to a report in the straitstimes.com, Singapore’s peak environmental body is offering up to $3500 – about the equivalent in Aussie dollars – for owners of older and more pollutive motorcycles to deregister their steeds over the next five years.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) says that motorcycles registered before July 1, 2003, are eligible for the incentive if they are deregistered on or before April 5, 2023. Local certificate of entitlement rules also have to be met, while bikes on the classic and vintage register are not included.

According to the NEA, around 27,000 motorcycles are eligible for the scheme.

NEA says that the new incentives have been introduced to reduce the amount of carbon monoxide and ozone released into the air.

Motorcycles make up 15 per cent of vehicles in Singapore, but they are claimed contribute to more than 53 per cent of carbon monoxide emissions from vehicles.

What do you think? Good policy or is the NEA targeting the wrong group?
