Rising Aussie teenager Tye Simmonds has finished second in the 47th annual New Zealand Motocross Grand Prix in Manawatu.
The 16-year-old went 4-3-3 on his KTM 250SX-F to snare the runner-up spot from local rider, Honda's Michael Phillips , in the MX2 class.
"The track was super rough and it had huge ruts," said Simmonds. "I felt I put in a solid performance, but the locals didn't want this title crossing the Tasman that's for sure.
"Mike Phillips certainly stepped it up for the event, and Scott Columb who I battled with at the NZ Supercross was equally as competitive. Columb didn't finish the final moto, and if he did he would have been putting the pressure on me.
"It's great to race against these guys as just the experience alone is worth it, plus it's a good feeling to place second in such a prestigious event."
In then MX1 class, Daryl Hurley blitzed, winning all three races on his Suzuki to win from countrymen Luke Burkhart (Honda) and Justin McDonald (Honda).
Enduro star Paul Whibley, a dominant force in the American GNCC title, won the 'River' race in Manawatu on his Kawasaki.
