Both two- and four-wheeled motorsports fans in NSW are bracing for a bumper weekend in early October, when the Red Bull X-Fighters freestyle motocross title descends on Sydney and goes back to back with the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
Saturday, October 6 will see Sydney's Cockatoo Island play host to the grand finale of the 2012 Red Bull X-Fighters FMX series, where the world's best moto acrobats will battle it out before an awestruck Aussie crowd. Then, the next day, the eyes of the nation's car racing fans -- and those of a good many others dotted around the world -- will turn their attention west to Mount Panorama, for the running of the 2012 SuperCheap Bathurst 1000.
To mark the one-month countdown to this epic weekend of competition, 2011 Red Bull X-Fighters Champion Josh Sheehan backflipped his 450cc dirt bike at a media event at Cockatoo Island -- clean over TeamVodafone V8 Supercar ace Craig Lowndes and his Holden Commodore race car!Sheehan hadn't performed the backflip since he won the X-Fighters title last year, and admitted to experiencing some nervous excitement before his latest attempt. The Aussie rider is still following a programme of intense rehabilitation following an injury sustained earlier in the year. "I have been putting a lot of effort into training and today has been a real eye-opener as I realise it's exactly one month before I'll be here defending my Red Bull X-Fighters title from last year," he said.
"I'll be doing everything I can to win it but for the competition as a whole it is exciting to be going to the final round with two riders -- Levi Sherwood and Thomas Pages -- tied on points," he added.
Lowndes, who is also a keen rider, said it was a privelege to see Sheehan strut his stuff. "That was great fun -- we watch these guys from afar so it's great to actually be a part of it," he said.
