What is the 2023 Segway UT10 Fugleman?
Segway Powersports only hit the Aussie scene a few years ago, but its wide range of off-road machines for recreational and agricultural use are quickly gaining attention Down Under.
And, before you ask, no it doesn’t import the quirky original self-balancing two-wheel Segway that looks more like a death-trap than a form of transport. Those are only available in the US.
Imported and sold through Urban Moto Imports, the Segway Powersports range offers a host of ATVs, UTVs, and high-performance side-by-sides.
The machine we’re testing here is the most affordable version of its Fugleman UTV range – the three-seat UT10 Rugged EPS.
How much does the 2023 Segway UT10 Fugleman cost?
Pricing for Segway’s side-by-side UTV range starts from just under $20,000, with the 2023 Segway UT10 Rugged EPS Fugleman tested here being the entry point into the range.
The price-led UT10 Rugged EPS opens the three-seater range at $19,990, sitting below the UT10 E and UT10 X, priced at $24,990 and $26,990 respectively.
If you need to carry more people, a pair of six-seater ‘Crew’ variants are also available, with the UT10 Crew EPS and UT10 Crew Premium priced between $25,990-$28,990.
If you’re in the market for a UTV, there are plenty of similar options on the market from rivals like Can-Am, Kubota, Polaris, and fellow Chinese manufacturer, CFMOTO.
What equipment comes with the 2023 Segway UT10 Fugleman?
As the entry point into the range, the 2023 Segway UT10 Rugged EPS is light on when it comes to equipment.
Standard equipment includes a 105hp 1000cc four-stroke engine, adjustable hydraulic suspension, front and rear locking diffs, three pews, LED daytime running lights (DRLs), and halogen headlights.
You can load the rear tilt tray with up to 450kg, while a towing capacity is rated at an impressive 1134kg. The Fugleman also offers on-demand two- or four-wheel drive.
EPS, which stands for electronic power steering, is offered in three modes – Standard, Comfort, and Sport – depending on driver preference.
But the entry and mid-spec UT10 miss out on the reverse camera and central touch-screen found in the top-spec UT10 X, although the driver still gets a colour digital instrument cluster.
A range of optional extras can be purchased from Segway Powersports, including underbody skid plates, fender flares, exterior mirrors, mesh ‘doors’, a half windshield, and more.
How safe is the 2023 Segway UT10 Fugleman?
Even with the half-windscreen installed, the 2023 Segway UT10 Fugleman can make you feel rather exposed, particularly at high speeds through a bit of bush.
Seatbelts for all three passengers make you feel a little safer, as does the ‘high-strength’ chromium-molybdenum steel frame, but you can forget about safety tech like ABS (anti-lock brakes) or ESC (electronic stability control).
What is the 2023 Segway UT10 Fugleman like to drive?
With just two passengers and no cargo or equipment to weigh you down, the 2023 Segway UT10 Fugleman is a lot of fun to zip around in.
There’s plenty of grunt on offer from its four-stroke DOHC petrol engine that provides plenty of gusto, producing 105hp (78kW) and 93.5Nm of torque.
Throttle feel is sharp and responsive too, while the multiple steering modes are no gimmick, providing meaningful changes to steering feel. But there’s little in the way of feedback, and while it feels weighty, it also feels rather disconnected from the wheels.
Even still, it’s relatively easy to direct and simple to operate, even for beginners.
If you’re wearing a helmet, you might as well forget about trying to have a conversation with your passengers, because even at idle, its tractor-like exhaust is loud.
But while those might sound like negatives, the entry-level Fugleman is everything you’d expect from a utility vehicle. What this reviewer didn’t expect, is just how enjoyable it is to thrash around.
It feels more a lot powerful than the average farmer would probably need, which will come in handy for those needing to lug around equipment and a few people. During our test, with just two humans on board, you can use that leftover horsepower to hurtle through the Aussie dust at unnerving, adrenaline-inducing speeds. In a word, it’s FUN.
A 320mm ground clearance might not seem like much, but it oozes confidence off-road, tackling every obstacle we threw at it with ease, traversing sticks, ditches, mud, and rocks with surprising competence.
From the driver’s seat, it feels tough and solid, with hard-wearing materials at all major touch points, and thoughtful additions like an enclosed dash box for storage and cup holders up front.
