For the past half-a-dozen years, it has been rumoured that Volkswagen has been interested in developing a range of motorcycles, its $2.5billion purchase of Suzuki shares (20 per cent of the company) in 2009 hinting at the German company's intent.
But now we have rock-solid evidence that Volkswagen wants to get into the two-wheeled market, with photos recently surfacing of this 'Volksmotorrad' creation.
Actually, the evidence isn't quite rock solid. In fact it's downright flimsy, considering this motorcycle was cobbled together by a very dedicated Volkswagen aficionado, who is now trying to sell it on eBay.
This customised motorcycle is going for a WWII look and feel. It makes use of a number of different components but is based around a 1600cc Volkswagen engine paired to a right-angle gearbox and centrifugal clutch. It's also got a VW badge on its tank.
The seller really knows how to market the product, too. "The exhaust from the rear cylinders does make your feet hot; it's not really made for a long ride anyway," he states.
Any other drawbacks? Well, judging by its car tyres it's probably no corner carver. "The seller assumes no liability or warranty; this is a custom-built bike with unique riding characteristics. I have ridden it without incident, but it is not a beginner bike at all," states the eBay listing.
No kidding.
Held together with an aesthetically pleasing Yamaha frame that has the appearance of being whittled from timber, the front forks are from a Honda CB650. The source of the drum brakes is unknown.
