After a successful wildcard outing at the inaugural round of this year's World Superbike Championship (Phillip Island, Australia, February 27 - see accompanying photos), Australian racer Josh Waters has secured a second wildcard SBK ride with the Yoshimura Suzuki race team. Waters will be campaigning the Yoshimura Suzuki GSX-R1000 at Miller Motorsports Park, Salt Lake City (Utah), USA, on May 30.
Twenty-four-year-old Waters, the 2009 Australian Superbike Champion, struggled with a deflating front tyre in race one at Phillip Island to finish in 18th place, but he managed a credible 13th position in race two.
Yoshimura team boss, Fujio Yoshimura, was sufficiently impressed to offer Waters a second crack at the top-tier, production-bike-based championship: "Josh showed he has the potential," said Yoshimura. "I have told him we'd like him to ride again in America at Miller Motorsports Park. It's a good start for the team and Josh and we will both get better," he added.
The news represents a solid step forward for Waters' overseas aspirations. The Victorian had previously tried out for the Rockstar Makita AMA Superbike team in 2010, but a heavy crash in testing sidelined him for the majority of the remainder of the season.
Yoshimura has also confirmed that Yoshimura Suzuki will be contesting the Suzuka 8 Hours Endurance race and possibly another one or two World Superbike rounds in the second half of the 2011 season.
