Scorpion takes to the air
Why ride a bike, when you can fly a Scorpion hoverbike?Has motorcycling's death knell finally been sounded? Would you ride a motorcycle, when instead you could take to the air and ride a Scorpion hoverbike?
Russian company Hoversurf is hoping thrill-seekers will opt for the latter, leaving terra firma in favour of the big blue on one of its neat little quadcopters.
Built for one courageous pilot, the Scorpion has a prop mounted low at each of its four corners with a motorcycle-style seat in the centre. The maker claims it delivers agility when you want it, stability when you don't, and is an "extreme sports instrument" with unexplored transportation potential.
The Scorpion began life as a crowd-funding project and indeed its creators are still looking for investors to see the endeavour, err, take off. The business seems to have a bit of momentum too, having offices in Moscow in Russia and San Francisco in the US.
Then again, it's not the only flying bike around – we detailed the Aero-X Hoverbike back in 2014. Back then it the company said it would be ready for sale in 2017, but its website has been pretty quiet of late – its last news release went out at the end of 2015…
Nah, think we'll stick with MTT's mind-bending Y2K motorcycle. It might stay on the ground, but with a helicopter-sourced jet turbine engine we think it has just as much 'thrill potential' as any quadcopter.
Don't get us wrong, we like the idea of the Scorpion, but we'd be looking for some sort of ejector seat and parachute if things went wrong – we don't fancy trying to leap clear of those rotors…
