Scooters gain from steep oil prices

The recent massive lift in international oil prices may turn out to be a good thing for the scooter industry, with media outlets internationally reporting a surge of interest in the economical two-wheelers. Here is a sample of what's being reported

KBCI News, USA
"Right now I'm spending $50 to $60 every seven to ten days (on gas). It's just killing my budget so I need to make a change," said Carlene Nichols.

That's why Carlene Nichols is scooter shopping. She says her Land Rover gets ten to 15 miles per gallon. So, a scooter's 60 to 80 miles a gallon is tempting.

"Scootering seems like a great idea. It's not only saving money it's also saving the environment and it's a great way to get around town," said Nichols.

Edmonton Sun, Canada
Cheaper than a car and much easier on the gas budget, scooters are becoming more popular in Edmonton.

Which is good news for Dylan Liley, owner of Top Gear Scooters on Whyte Avenue.

"I think people need a transportation alternative, “ said Liley.

A big population of his clientele buy scooters because it's cheaper than owning a vehicle.

"You'll save between $8,000 and $9,000 per year not having a car," said Liley, who gave up his car a long time ago to ride his hopped-up scooter year round.

Liley's father, who commutes from Strathcona County to 170 Street, also traded in his truck for a scooter.

His fuel costs went down to $7 per week from $85.

INQ7, Phillipines
Because of surging oil prices, Filipinos are turning to motorcycles and scooters for transport.

Francis Rivera, president of the National Federation of Motorcycle Clubs of the Philippines (NFMCP), said about 50,000 motorcycles and scooters are being bought every month.

He said close to 3.5 million Filipinos own motorcycles or scooters compared to only 1.1 million four years ago. He said Filipinos preferred motorcycles and scooters because these are more economical.
