Scooter sales up as market slows

Double-digit growth for scooters as Aussie motorcycle market dips by 5.9 per cent compared to the same period in 2017

Scooters are undergoing a sales resurgence despite the overall national motorcycle market recording a 5.9 per cent decline for the first six months of 2018 compared with the same period last year.

According to official industry data figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries, scooters were the only segment to show improvement with a 10.9 per cent increase, albeit off a low sales base.

From January to June, motorcycle industry sales totalled 47,942 compared with 50,939 for the same period in 2017. Road was the largest segment with 19,075 sales, followed by off-road (15,580), ATV (11,196) and scooter (2095).

ATV sales are down 10.7 per cent, with road and off-road also dropping by 5.3 and 4.8 per cent respectively. The scooter segment has grown by 10.9 per cent.

Polaris recorded the most sales in ATV, with Yamaha, Honda and Piaggio leading the way in off-road, road and scooter.

The overall market leader was Honda, selling 11,655 new bikes (down 7.6 per cent), but still commanding 24.3 per cent of the overall market. Yamaha was the second largest seller (10,085 units), an increase of 2.6 per cent on the same period last year and with a 21 per cent overall market share.

In third place overall was Kawasaki (4718) from Suzuki (3724), Harley-Davidson (3629), KTM (3476), Polaris (3098), BMW (1395), BRP (1308) and Husqvarna (1232).

Six marques have increased sales in 2018 – Aprilia, Indian, Kawasaki, Moto Guzzi, Vespa and Yamaha – while the remainder have contracted.

A number of non-FCAI members aren’t included in the official sales data, including Royal Enfield, Gas Gas, MV Agusta, Sherco, Benelli, CFMoto, Kymco and SYM.
