South Australia's David Schwarz (KTM) will embark on his third Dakar Rally from January 3-18 next year, as the gruelling event takes to South America for the first time.
The 2009 instalment of Dakar will be 10,000km long, with 6000km of special stages as it traverses through Argentina and Chile. The event will start and finish in Buenos Aires.
"I was really disappointed when the 2008 Dakar was cancelled due to the possibility of terrorist attacks and instability in Mauritania, especially after putting so much time and money into my preparation," said Schwarz. "I'll be riding the KTM 690 Rally in South American as I know this bike can stand the distance and tackle every obstacle that is thrown in its path."
Schwarz, who finished seventh in this year's Australian Safari, is the only Australian entered in the 2009 Dakar Rally.
