Classic motorcycle racers and enthusiasts should block out the dates of next year's Australia Day long weekend - January 25-27 - because that's when the 2013 AMCN International Island Classic will be taking over Victoria's spectacular Phillip Island circuit.
The organiser of the event, Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, said the event promises to be the best Island Classic yet, with over 260 riders battling it out on a superb selection of over 350 individual machines.
Classes include:
- Pre-WWI
- Vintage: 1920-45
- Classic: 1946-62
- Post Classic: 1963-72
- Forgotten Era: 1973-82
There's also the recently introduced New Era (1983-90), along with a sidecar class.
Over 20,000 spectators are expected to line the circuit, which was recently resurfaced, so the action is guaranteed to be fast and furious with lap records set to tumble. Each year the Island Classic attracts a star-studded cast of top-flight racers, with some of Australia's best riders locking horns with some international greats.
It's now the largest motorcycle race meeting of its type in the southern hemisphere, and a major fixture on the international classic bike racing calendar, too.
The Managing Director of Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit, Fergus Cameron, said the event would soar to new heights in 2013, with plenty of surprises in store.
"We are determined to make this the biggest and best Island Classic event yet," he said. "The event is now ready to be taken to the next level and we're working on some major initiatives that will begin that process. We're working closely with our event partners and we'll be announcing initiatives as they are confirmed. It's fair to say we are already excited about the 2013 event," he added.
