Sam Masters claimed the 2017 Australian Speedway Senior Solo Championship on Saturday, January 14 in Kurri Kurri (NSW), finally seizing the No. 1 spot after finishing runner-up over the past two years.
The 25-year-old was guaranteed of championship success even before the final – which he moved straight into to after scoring 14pts in the heats – after main rival Justin Sedgemen struggled in Kurri Kurri and just scraped into the semi-final.
Masters finished fourth in the final behind 2016 champion Brady Kurtz, Nick Morris and Troy Batchelor, but it mattered little as he won the 2017 title on 58pts from Sedgemen (55), Dave Watt (55), Batchelor (49), Max Fricke (47), Morris (43), Kurtz (42) and Rohan Tungate (30). The top eight are automatically seeded for the 2018 Australian championship.
