Kawasaki's Meghan Rutledge has begun the 2014 FIM Women’s World Motocross Championship campaign in the best possible way by winning both motos at the first round in Qatar on the weekend of March 1-2.
The 19-year-old from Picton (NSW) was imperious, grabbing the holeshot in both races and then checking out to easily take home the clean sweep on her Bud Racing KX250F.
After finishing second overall in the 2013 world title, Rutledge has now laid the foundations to go one better in 2014.
“I couldn’t have asked for a better start to the season,” said Rutledge. “I won races last year but never the double like I have here so I’m so excited.
“I can’t thank everybody at Bud Kawasaki Racing enough and also everyone at Kawasaki Australia for their ongoing support. It feels great to be able to get the red plate here at the first round and I can’t wait to get to Italy for the second round.”
Ireland’s Natalie Kane (KTM) and German Larissa Papenmeier (Suzuki) completed the podium in race one, and in the second Livia Lancelot (Kawasaki) and Kane joined Rutledge on the dais.
Rutledge is on a maximum 50pts, from Kane (42) and Lancelot (36). Round two – of six – will be held in Trentino, Italy on April 12-13.
Meanwhile, Australia’s Todd Waters’ debut in the premier MXGP class on a Husqvarna saw him score respectable 14-11 finishes, with the races won by Maximilian Nagl (Honda) and Gautier Paulin (Kawasaki). For full results and standings, visit www.mxgp.com/results/standings.
