Australia’s Megan Rutledge (Kawasaki) has completed a stellar rookie year in the Women’s Motocross World Championship with a second place finish behind Italy’s Kiara Fontanesi (Yamaha), with the final round taking place in the Czech Republic on July 26-27.
But it all came down to the wire. Rutledge, who was seeking to become Australia’s first world motocross champion, finished second in both motos at Loket, while Fontanesi (1-3) was also up to the task and did more than enough to retain her No. 1 plate by five points. Livia Lancelot (Kawasaki) won race two and completed the championship in third place.
In race two, at one stage the order ran Rutledge, Nancy Van De Ven (Yamaha), Lancelot and Fontanesi, which would have given the Aussie the title.
Fortunately for Fontanesi, all possibilities were put to rest when Lancelot, a proven master of hilly, rocky and clay-based circuits, decided she’d turn up the heat and charge past all three riders to run away with a convincing race win.
Final championship standings: 1. Chiara Fontanesi (ITA, YAM), 255 points; 2. Meghan Kat Rutledge (AUS, KAW), 250.; 3. Livia Lancelot (FRA, KAW), 232.; 4. Stephanie Laier (GER, SUZ), 212.; 5. Nancy Van De Ven (NED, YAM), 182.; 6. Larissa Papenmeier (GER, SUZ), 172.; 7. Natalie Kane (IRL, KTM), 151.; 8. Anne Borchers (GER, SUZ), 145.; 9. Marianne Veenstra (NED, HUS), 127.; 10. Francesca Nocera (ITA, SUZ), 115.
