
Italian Valentino Rossi has signed a two-year contract extension to continue his MotoGP career with Yamaha until at least the end of the 2016 season, by which time the nine-time world champion will be 37 years old.
Rossi currently sits second in the 2014 MotoGP standings behind Honda’s Marc Marquez, having scored five podiums from eight races so far this year.
“I am very happy to announce that I have signed a new contract with Yamaha to continue together in MotoGP for the next two years,” said Rossi. “It’s very important to me because I really enjoy working with my crew and all the guys from the team, both the Japanese and European members who have been with me almost my entire career.
“It’s great because this was my target; I wanted to continue, I am feeling good and I’m motivated to keep giving my best.”
Meanwhile, Rossi’s current teammate Jorge Lorenzo is out of contract at the end of 2014. He wants to remain at Yamaha but admits “there are some differences between us”. When pressed, he said: “Mainly economically to be honest.” A searing performance in the next round at Sachsenring on July 13 could come at just the right time…
