Rossi breaks leg

Training spill sees the MotoGP great sustain double leg fracture, placing a cloud over title hopes

Movistar Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi has broken his leg in an accident during training, with the 38-year-old fracturing both his right tibia and fibula.

The seven-time MotoGP World Champion suffered a fall in an endurance motocross event held near his home town of Tuvullia, between the centres of Rimini and Pesaro, the accident seeing him quickly transferred to a nearby hospital.

In an official statement the Movistar Yamaha team said Rossi would be operated on "as soon as possible", with the procedure expected to take place today (Friday).

The injury is a severe blow for Rossi, who will now most likely sit out the next grand prix round due to be held at Misano, San Marino, on September 10.

It's the same leg 'The Doctor' broke in a fall during practice for the Mugello MotoGP round in 2010. That injury led to Rossi having the leg pinned, the pin finally being removed two years later.

Rossi currently lies fourth in the MotoGP World Championship, some 26 points behind title leader Andrea Dovizioso (Ducati), with six rounds remaining.
