Multi world GP champ Valentino Rossi has attracted the ire of the tax man in Italy, and faces fines and back taxes of up to 112 million Euro (Au$181 million) on earnings of 60 million.
The figure is made up of 43.7 million unpaid taxes, with the rest stiff penalties.
Rossi's high profile as Italy's best-paid sportsman has helped to make him a target, particularly since he moved to London to take advantage of its less punitive tax regime.
The dispute is now likely to centre over exactly what his residential status is.
"Everybody in the world knows I have lived in London, an extraordinary city, since 2000. Naturally I go back to Italy to see my family, friends and to take holidays," he told The Guardian newspaper.
"The tax agency is rightly doing its job. My consultants are already examining the issue."
