A new star of motorcycle racing has been found, with teenage sensation Meghan Rutledge taking out the 2011 Motul Pirelli Australian Women’s Motocross Championship in Coolum on August 28.
The 16-year-old from Picton (NSW) Kawasaki rider mastered the wet and muddy conditions to win all five motos, producing one of the most dominate performances seen at a national championship. And making her achievement all the more remarkable was that the event was her debut at a senior national championship.
Rutledge finished ahead of 2010 champion Kristy Gillespie (2-2-2-2-3) and Jess Moore (4-3-4-5-2).
“I absolutely stoked,” Rutledge said. “It’s been my first year of seniors and to win the Australian championship is such a big accomplishment and I’m really proud of what I’ve achieved.
“I didn’t expect to be as dominant but after the first race when I won by a fair bit, I just wanted to win every moto by as big a gap as I could.
“Huge thanks to the guys from Monster Energy Kawasaki for all their help, especially my mechanic Ben (Lane) for all that he did.”
2009 champion Tori Dare (5-6-5-4-5) and Courtney Knight (3-4-8-7-6) rounded out the top five finishers.
