Roland Sands likes to be seen – and he certainly didn’t go unnoticed at the recent Sturgis Rally riding a modern interpretation of ‘boardtracker’ powered by a current Indian Thunder Stroke 111 engine and sporting a rigid - and we mean rigid - rear end.
A blog on the Roland Sands website described the process as the following: “Simplicity is a complicated thing. Deconstruction of a fully engineered machine down to its absolute simplest form takes determination, perseverance, connections and lots of hours.”
And the Roland Sands Design team did just that to create the machine, starting with the leaf spring front end, supported by a small piggyback shock. There are radial brakes – boardtrackers didn’t have any stoppers… - the fuel tank is hand-made from titanium, and the wiring system “has been pulled apart and rebuilt with 90 per cent of the connectors removed for a thin, purpose-built loom”. There’s also a ride-by-wire throttle.
The Thunder Stroke 111 engine has a RSD intake and gases are emitted via a titanium tubing exhaust. The rear end is simplistic – no suspension and fender, just the wheel.
The end result is something that’s pretty keen on the eye. For other Roland Sands bike projects, visit www.rolandsands.com/bikes.
