Robbie Maddison wins Red Bull X-Fighters in Canada

Dominates from the outset

Robbie Maddison had a "a good feeling from the start" in last weekend's round two of the Red Bull X-Fighters freestyle title in Calgary, and that's how it panned out as the Australian routed the best in the world.

The 28-year-old New South Welshman conquered Japan's Eigo Sato in the final, but it was his quarter-final victory over Nate Adams that gave him the confidence to go all the way.

Maddison wasn't as audacious as Adams, but he accumulated more points with a superior all-round performance.

"I can't believe it. It's a dream come true," said Maddison. "The hard work paid off, and the whole day was totally insane."

After failing to score any points in round one, Maddison has now leapfrogged to fourth overall on 100pts, behind Sato (160), round one winner Levi Sherwood (130) and Mat Rebeaud (130).

Sherwood, the 17-year-old wunderkind from New Zealand, came back to earth with seventh place in Calgary, held in front of 21,000 fans at Stampede Park.

Rebeaud, from Switzerland, was third.

The next round will be held in America on June 27, followed by Spain (July 16) and the season finale in England (August 22).
