An American motorcyclist claims he got more than he bargained for on a ride when the trip left him afflicted with a sustained, long-term erection.
Known medically as priapism -- essentially a persistent and often painful penile erection that simply won't subside -- the Californian man, Henry Wolf, says the condition was a result of a four-hour ride he took in 2010 on his 1993 BMW, which had been fitted with a Corbin seat.
Based in Hollister, California, Corbin has been producing aftermarket motorcycle seats (like the one pictured) for over 40 years. These days it is a leader in its field, boasting a multi-million-dollar turnover. It isn't known which particular model of BMW Wolf was riding.
According to America's ABC News, Wolf, 52, developed priapism soon after the ride, and then had to contend with a troublesome erection for the next 20 months. The official complaint alleges that the condition was caused by the "ridge-like" Corbin seat fitted to the bike, which was "negligently designed, manufactured and/or installed by the defendants".
Wolf and his lawyer, Vernon Bradley, are now preparing to sue both BMW and Corbin.
The official complaint says the medical condition has caused Wolf much anguish. "He is now unable to engage in sexual activity, which is causing him substantial emotional and mental anguish," it alleges.
According to Bradley, the stricken rider is seeking unspecified reparations for personal injury, medical costs, lost wages, product liability and negligent infliction of emotional distress.
Speaking with ABC News, Bradley said Wolf's life had been turned upside-down since that fateful outing. "It’s very embarrassing and all kinds of problems have developed,” he said. “He's had to reconfigure his clothing and going to the bathroom was a problem,” he added. Bradley also said that while his client's condition has since been treated and the erection has finally subsided, Mr Wolf now suffers from erectile dysfunction.
Bradley said he would be serving the lawsuits in early May -- both BMW and Corbin then have 30 days to respond.
