Rider gets burnt by barbecue commute

Fined $800 and loses his licence for one month for joining forces with a four burner

A Suzuki Intruder 250 rider who was snapped carrying a barbecue by a passerby on one of Melbourne's busiest arterials has been fined $800 and lost his licence for one month.

The 'incident' occurred on January 27, 2008 (the height of barbecue season, it must be said) after 29-year-old Michael Wiles picked up the stray cooker from a nature strip, saving the castaway from a final trip to the transfer station.

Wiles threaded his body trough the barbecue and set off down the Eastern Freeway, during which time he was snapped by a car driver and his identity eventually traced by the police.

According to the www.theage.com.au, the incident was completely out of character for the New Zealander, who had arrived in Australia just five months before the 'event'.

The court heard in the wake of his identity being revealed in the media, Wiles was approached by Barbecues Galore for some work, however he decided it would be inappropriate to "glorify" his act of stupidity.

Wiles today pleaded guilty to one count of reckless driving.

And the barbecue turned out to be a flop…
