The balance of the 2011 BMW GS Safari will be completed on sealed roads following the tragic passing of a competitor in the popular off-road event.
According to a South Australia police media release, the 48-year-old, who is yet to be named, was involved in an accident about 10:00am on Monday (September 19) morning. He was first conveyed to Broken Hill Hospital before being airlifted to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.
The man was an experienced off-road rider and GS Safari veteran, and has even embarked on similar adventures overseas.
The GS Safari began in Broken Hill (NSW) on September 18, and is still due for completion at Pt Lincoln (SA) on September 23.
But as of this morning, the decision was taken to eschew dirt over the last two days, with the balance to be completed on sealed roads only.
According to BMW Motorrad Australia’s Chief of Corporate Communications, Piers Scott, the local authorities, as part of their initial investigation, made the recommendation to complete the event on tarmac, with BMW complying with the request.
