There will be a second Australian on the MotoGP grid in 2022, with Remy Gardner inking a coveted deal with the Tech3 KTM team.
Gardner, who is currently leading the Moto2 World Championship, will join Ducati rider Jack Miller as the only full-time Australian MotoGP riders.
“I’m extremely happy that KTM has given me this opportunity,” said Gardner. “It’s a dream come true for me and what we have worked for up until this point.”
KTM is equally excited about the move. “It’s a real pleasure for us to bring Remy to MotoGP next season,” said KTM Motorsport Director Pit Beirer. “We knew about his speed and ability for Moto2 and he has confirmed that potential.”
Riding for Red Bull KTM Ajo in 2021, Gardner follows the footsteps of Brad Binder and Miguel Oliveira who graduated to the premier class from the same team. Both Binder and Oliveira have tasted victory in the MotoGP class aboard KTM machinery.

With Gardner set to replace Iker Lecuona or Danilo Petrucci in the Tech3 KTM team, the Austrian marque is currently experiencing an overflow of talent from the lower ranks. Raul Fernandez and Pedro Acosta are two more KTM riders tipped to join the premier class in the coming years.
The Australian rider has a long relationship with KTM, and has risen through the ranks as part of the successful KTM GP Academy. He made his Moto3 debut in 2014 and progressed to Moto2 for the 2016 season, but he only won his first Grand Prix in 2020.
His rise to the premier class seems to have been aided by his breakout performances so far in 2021. He leads the Moto2 title race with five podium finishes and a win from just six races.
The 23-year-old will join the MotoGP ranks nearly 30 years after his father Wayne retired from Grand Prix motorcycle racing. Wayne Gardner, nicknamed the Wollongong Whiz, won the 1987 500cc World Championship riding for Rothman’s Honda HRC. He also finished runner-up twice and racked up 18 race wins in his 10-year grand prix career.
