A ruthless Chad Reed (Suzuki) continued his imperious SuperX campaign in the fifth round at Wollongong's WIN Stadium on November 15.
Reed was at the top of his game, humbling Australia's best in the 20-lap final with a mix of raw speed and precision. In particular, his seamless technique over the difficult whoops section was pure genius.
Reed's final winning margin over Yamaha's Jay Marmont -- the only rider to finish on the same lap as him -- was a massive 26.408secs, underlining just how dominant the world supercross champion was.
"The track layout tonight was awesome and provided some exciting, tough racing for fans," said Reed. "I think it is great that so many people are coming out to watch us race and Australia is noticing just how strong and skilled the guys in this sport are.
"I feel good and I feel strong. It was great to get back to a 20-lap final, as it gives me a pretty good indication of where I am at in terms of the AMA season."
In a scary portent for his competitors, Reed appears to be growing from strength to strength on his new Suzuki, and it appears that only a major change in fortune will stop him from going through the championship with a clean sweep.
Cheyne Boyd (Yamaha) filled out the final spot on the dais in Wollongong, from Troy Carroll (Kawasaki) and Suzuki's Cameron Taylor.
Daniel Reardon (Honda) was stalking Marmont during the first half of the final before he crashed in the whoops and didn't restart.
The 2007 Australian supercross champion has now dropped down to seventh in the standings on 70pts, behind Reed (125), Marmont (106), Boyd (87), McCoy (77), Carroll (74) and Taylor (73).
Other than Reed, Marmont has been the only other rider to finish on the podium in all five rounds, which includes three second places.
"It was great to have the crowd cheering me on out here tonight," said Marmont, who hails from Wollongong. "I had a bad start to the day but the support really lifted me."
"Second place is another solid result, I'll be looking to continue this run in the final two rounds and I feel that with the team behind me and the YZ450F working as well as it is we can have an exceptional season."
In the Lites class, a gritty Matt Moss (Suzuki) dug in his heels after a lap one collision with Ryan Marmont (KTM) to win the 15-lapper from Luke George (Kawasaki) and Tye Simmonds (KTM).
Moss dislocated his shoulder in the crash, but was still good enough to grind out his third win of the year.
"I am in a fair bit of pain right now, but it was great to get the win. My shoulder popped out in the crash with Marmont and I was struggling to hold onto the bar, but I knew I had to keep racing to maintain my place in the championship."
KTM duo Todd Waters and Danny Anderson were fourth and fifth.
Moss is now 39pts (119 to 90) ahead of George with two rounds remaining, while there is a logjam for third between Simmonds (74), Marmont (74), the injured Jake Moss (Yamaha, 72) and Anderson (68). Moss will sit out the rest of the year with a broken back.
SuperX now moves to Townsville on November 22 for the penultimate round of the championship, where the 'King of Supercross,' Jeremy McGrath and his American compatriot Chris Gosselaar will join the action.
McGrath will compete in Open, while Gosselaar will be in the Lites class. The duo will also stay on for the final round in Brisbane on November 29.
