Chad Reed (Honda) has secured his fifth podium finish in nine AMA supercross rounds this year, the latest a second place in Daytona, Florida last Saturday, March 5.
The main event was won by Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, by 6.506 seconds, with defending champion Ryan Dungey (Suzuki) third ahead of KTM’s Andrew Short and Yamaha’s Davi Millsaps.
“That wasn't my best ride,” Reed said. “I felt off tonight but I fought through to second and consistency is what wins championships so I’ll take it.
“I was disappointed I didn’t get off the line better and to be honest once I was out there I didn’t get going quickly enough. I don’t know why.
“Daytona is one of my favourite races – it’s always a real racer’s track. It changes radically from lap-to-lap so you need to remain alert and not allow yourself to become complacent otherwise it can bite you.”
James Stewart led the first three laps before crashing his Yamaha and allowing Villopoto to inherit the lead, which he held for the balance of the 20-lapper.
Villopoto’s win was the first time a rider has repeated as a Daytona Supercross champion since Ricky Carmichael in 2003. It was the fourth AMA Supercross win of the year for Villopoto and the Washington native expanded his championship lead to 23pts over Stewart and 24 over Reed.
Three other Australians completed the race – Michael Byrne (Suzuki) in 14th, Tye Simmonds (KTM) in 17th and Brett Metcalfe (Suzuki) in 18th.
